When the Ocean and Desert Were One

As a child, I was first introduced to the concept of geologic time by my father when we would go fossil-hunting in the Flint Hills of Kansas.  In the shale and limestone, I found forms of invertebrate life from when the prairie was once an ocean bottom so many millions of years ago.  The same is also true here in the desert southwest.
